For the visually-obsessed Generation X-ers comes their newest online revolution: Howcast.com, the little bastard offspring of Youtube and Wikipedia.
A cohort of former Google and Youtube employees put their giant brains together and came up with the idea for a Youtube-like encyclopedia warehouse where individuals will record acts of demonstration from how to hold a baby to how to build a laser security system.
They join their other geek comrades, www.ExpertVillage.com and www.Wonderhowto.com, in the world of video encyclopedias. But Howcast isn’t limited to demonstrational videos. Its creators also want the forum to act as a vehicle for emerging filmmakers, who desire to promote their creations.
Jason Liebman, Howcast co-founder, sees the internet as being split into two worlds: amateur and professional. Either you’re watching some college-aged stoner juggle empty Corona bottles or you’re watching a Steven Spielberg film. However, Liebman sees a world of profit in between those polar ends. Emerging filmmakers, those most in need (and in some cases, most deserving) of mass attention, can find a home on Howcast.
The internet is the ultimate tool of democracy. Online, everyone has a voice, and anyone can be heard, and seen. With the internet, we can educate one another, and nurture each other’s talents. Howcast is the newest illustration of the perfect democracy of the internet. No longer do filmmakers need the backing of a major studio to introduce their visions to the world. Now, all they need is a functioning internet connection and a user account.
